Macario
by Bruno Traven
Edited by Shielah R. Wilson
Macario is the story of a
poor man who has been hungry all his life. He suffers from a gnawing poverty which never
quite kills, but also never quite permits any visible change or hope. Despite his
acceptance of his colorless existence, he has a fantasy which becomes a tacit means of
survival, nourishing him far more than does his meager daily diet.
Macario is a long short story by the elusive B.
Traven. This book, which uses the unabridged Spanish text, is a reader designed for use in
second and third level Spanish courses. It is divided into eight study units. In each
unit, the text of the story appears on the right hand page; the left hand pages give
annotations and content questions. In the annotations, both the items to be glossed and
the definitions are in Spanish. Occasionally, an Ejemplo is given to help the
student arrive at the proper contextual meaning. The content questions are designed for
rapid response in class. At the end of each chapter there are a number of exercises of
various types. They provide additional practice on points of grammar and vocabulary which
occur in the text, in particular, the various uses and tenses of the subjunctive. In the
last exercise section, several topics are suggested as subjects for written themes or
extended class discussion. The end vocabulary, like the annotations, is completely in
Spanish.
